On 5th March, 1918, the 4th Middlesex battalion of 63 Brigade, 37th Division moved into the front line near Mount Sorrel to the south-east of Ypres where for two days they had to contend with bombardments by gas shells. Then, on 8th March, there came a fierce artillery bombardment of their lines starting at 9.30am and lasting through to 5.30pm, when it became intense. This was followed by an infantry attack. SOS flares were sent up and the British artillery responded and with machine-gun and rifle fire from the infantry, the attack was repelled. But considerable damage had been done to the the battalion’s trenches and there were over sixty casualties suffered by the battalion. Arthur Brooker died from wounds on 9th March.
